Defying the Tide
Balancing documentary observation with visual metaphor, the image reflects on the remarkable ability to find joy amid adversity. It is a meditation on resilience, freedom, and the enduring human instinct to confront uncertainty not only with courage, but with laughter.

Along Havana’s Malecón, a group of children play at the edge of the sea as a towering wave crashes against the seawall. Barefoot and shirtless, they confront the force of the ocean not with caution, but with the carefree energy of youth. Above them, water dominates the frame, transforming the scene into a dramatic encounter between human fragility and the power of nature.
Titled Defying the Tide, the photograph captures a fleeting moment in which danger and playfulness coexist. The same waves that regularly batter Havana’s coastline and contribute to the city’s deterioration become, in the eyes of the children, a source of excitement and wonder.
