Wonderland

Along Havana’s Calzada de Monte, once one of the city’s busiest commercial avenues, a line of aging vehicles passes beneath a faded sign that still reads El Mundo de las Maravillas (“The World of Wonders”). American automobiles from the 1950s share the street with Soviet-era cars, while weathered facades and deteriorating arcades bear witness to decades of transformation.

Titled Wonderland, the photograph explores the distance between aspiration and reality, between the promises suggested by language and the conditions shaped by time. The surviving sign, once intended to evoke abundance and possibility, acquires a different meaning when viewed against the urban landscape that surrounds it.
