The Watcher

Balancing documentary observation and visual metaphor, the work reflects on the ways history inhabits domestic spaces long after becoming part of the everyday landscape. Between the public symbol and the private individual, the photograph invites viewers to consider not only what is being seen, but who remains watching from behind.

A neighborhood window fills the frame. Attached to its handmade metal structure, a portrait of Fidel Castro and a small July 26th Movement flag occupy a space once typical of countless Cuban homes. Through an opening in the window, the face of a man emerges from the darkness, meeting the viewer’s gaze.

Titled The Watcher, the photograph explores the relationship between individual lives and the symbols that surround them. The portrait dominates the scene, yet the presence behind it reshapes its meaning. What first appears to be an image about ideology gradually reveals itself as a reflection on coexistence, memory, and human presence.
