The Last Hero

Photographed in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma in 2017, The Last Hero captures a young boy carrying a bust of José Martí through a landscape marked by destruction. Moments earlier, the storm had torn through the coastal community, leaving homes damaged, belongings scattered, and lives abruptly altered.

What transforms the scene into something extraordinary is the quiet determination of the child. Amid the debris, he chose not to rescue a possession, but a symbol. Cradled in his arms, the image of Martí—a defining figure in Cuban history—becomes more than a monument. It becomes a fragile inheritance carried into an uncertain future.
